The monocled cobra is a type of venomous snake that belongs to the Elapidae family of snakes. It is endemic to Asia, primarily throughout India and Sri Lanka. It has also been found in Cambodia, China (Yunnan province), Indonesia (Sumatra), Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and Bangladesh. In the world of snakes, they’re pretty much everywhere. You can find them on every continent but Antarctica. But that doesn’t mean all of these slithery creatures are created equal. In fact, there’s a world between two very common species of snakes: the monocled cobra and the spectacled cobra.

The Spectacled Cobra is a venomous snake found mainly in South Asia. It is native to India and Sri Lanka, but has spread throughout Southeast Asia. The Spectacled Cobra is responsible for many bites and fatalities every year, making it one of the most dangerous snakes in the world. In comparison with its relative, the Monocled Cobra, there are more human fatalities each year due to the former species’ aggression and nocturnal behavior.

  • A Monocled Cobra coloration can range from olivaceous to brownish to black above, with or without a yellow or orange-colored, O-shaped mark on the hood, depending on the species. A black patch appears on the bottom surface on either side of the hood, and one or two black crossbars appear on the belly behind it, forming a hoodie. It is customary for the rest of the belly to have the same color as the back but paler. On the other hand, Spectacled Cobra A hood mark with two circular designs joined by a curving line, suggesting the picture of spectacles, may be found on several specimens. This hood mark can be seen on the Spectacled Cobra’s hood towards the front. The spectacular hood of this species, which it grows when threatened, makes it easy to identify.
