Possibilities and challenges of Huawei Harmony OS
Huawei harmony OS
On December 16, Huawei released their new operating system Harmony OS 2.0 Beta.
This version has been developed primarily targeting smartphones and tablets. It will hit the market in 2021. Huawei harmony OS is able to support the Android app, as Harmony OS is offering the benefits of a two-in-one operating system! Huawei will also use Harmony OS instead of Windows on their desktops and laptops by the end of next year. As many of us may already know, Harmony OS is a universal distributed operating system that can operate anywhere from smartwatches to computers – called “One Operating System for Every Device”.
Huawei harmony OS, however, is calling it “An Operating System For Internet Of Everything”!
Huawei has been forced to accelerate its own ecosystem due to the US government’s ban on Google’s Android OS on Huawei’s devices.
The impact of the US sanctions was such that Ren Zhengfei, founder and CEO of Huawei Technologies, announced in June 2019 that their revenue would be reduced by about 100 billion between 2019 and 2020! Despite a lot of anxiety and pressure at the time, Huawei did very well. Huawei earned 81.3 billion yuan in the third quarter of 2020, up 9.9 percent from the same period last year.
Huawei is working hard to create and implement its own Huawei harmony OS
Basically, the real purpose of Trump’s ban on Huawei was to keep Chinese technology companies in the face of various obstacles and to keep them out of global competition. But Huawei is still tackling everything in spite of hundreds of obstacles! Huawei has already received a good response by bringing many of the best hardware to the market and now it is also preparing well to compete in the software market. If Huawei succeeds, Trump’s move could be a boomerang and a major threat to the American tech industry!
Although Huawei harmony OS is not yet fully developed
Of course, creating a new software-environment is a huge task, but Huawei has many reasons to be successful. Huawei spends a lot of money on research and development every year. Huawei’s R&D budget in 2019 was. 15.3 billion and this year this expenditure. Will exceed 20 billion. In other words, this top position of Huawei in terms of research and development has repeatedly proved to be a very big positive aspect for Huawei.
Creating a new operating system is a deadly risky move
Especially since it requires thousands of developers to create new applications, which is the first and most important thing for any eco-system. In this case, the example of a tech giant like Microsoft can be drawn. Microsoft’s Windows Mobile OS only failed due to the lack of enough apps for the mobile platform. Microsoft has not been able to attract developers as there are very few Windows Mobile OS users. As a result, the failure of Windows Mobile OS became inevitable in the face of established eco-systems like Android.
Although Huawei harmony OS is in a completely different position
The United States has closed all avenues to Huawei, so there is no other way for Huawei to survive but to create a new ecosystem, which is the only way for Huawei to see losses for a while. Also, a big difference between Huawei harmony OS from Windows OS is that it supports Android applications. So as long as Harmony’s own app ecosystem is not enriching, it will be able to adapt to the Android ecosystem. So Harmony is not in a risk position like Windows in this case! Huawei harmony OS also has the facility to port Windows desktop and iOS apps. So this is also a big plus point for Harmony.
There are also a few more reasons for Huawei harmony OS to be successful
First, Huawei’s unrivaled position in the Chinese home market and the overwhelming support of ordinary consumers, including the Chinese government, towards Huawei. China’s domestic market alone is one-third of the whole world! So it is said, that the company is Chinese
It can take a place in the market, it just occupies a good part of the global market! It is a place of great hope and strength for Huawei at the same time. Chinese customers are more likely to support their own operating system than to buy a device with a foreign operating system, which will give Chinese developers more than enough incentive to create Harmony apps. In fact, more than 100,000 software developers have already participated in the Harmony OS project, and the number of hardware partners has also increased from 05 to 10.
Of course this is not just an economic issue
Which influences Chinese customers to support Huawei; Most of the Chinese customers have a clear feeling that they, along with Huawei and other Chinese companies, have themselves been mistreated by the current US administration, especially what has happened to Huawei. So buying any Huawei product (which is undoubtedly rich in great technology) has become a metaphor for supporting the country from its place!
Second and most importantly, Harmony OS IV was created in the era of industrial-revolution based technologies. such as Five-G, AI, and the Internet of Things. And the most important thing in this age is ‘Seamless Connectivity. And the basis of Harmony is this Seamless Connectivity. This is undoubtedly an Operating System designed for a new era!
Despite Apple and Microsoft’s complete dominance in the computer operating system market, Google’s new Android operating system was successful. As Google’s Android was based on mobile computing and the advent of smartphones was able to give consumers a whole new experience of using a touchscreen. As a result, Android was able to establish itself as a very successful operating system in a new era.
Similarly, Huawei harmony OS is not just about building an ecosystem for mobile phones or tablets.
It is basically an eco-system designed for a new era where all digital devices will work in a network connected to each other. Current conventional operating systems are not ideal for use in this new type of computing. Therefore, considering the needs of the age, Google and Microsoft themselves are working to replace their established Android and Windows operating systems with FuchsiaOS and Windows CoreOS, respectively. In this case, Huawei harmony OS was ahead of them.
Already, big smart home appliance manufacturers like Midea, Joyoung and Robam Appliances have started using Harmony OS in their products and bringing a lot of products to the market.
Huawei is also working on collaborations with Chinese smartphone companies so that companies use Harmony OS on their smartphones. If Huawei is able to do this, then it can be said that Huawei will go a long way in the race to establish their operating system.
After all, the time has not yet come to confirm anything
It’s still early days. Western nations are clearly skeptical of China’s progress
But with this history of innovation in the new era, Huawei’s determination to overcome this barrier in the next few years and create something new, if it creates a jolt in the global technology industry, I would not be surprised.
